How to organise your wardrobe properly

You may not love organising but you have to agree that a well-organised space gives you a euphoric sense of joy and relief. However, if your wardrobe is the one thing that gets messy within two minutes of cleaning up and organising, then you are doing it wrong. Read on to find out the correct way to organise.

1. Buy Hangers!

The first most important tool is a hanger. Buy loads of coordinated hangers for a clean look. coordinated hangers ensure that all the clothes are on the same level and are hence easier to find. If you don’t have too much space in your closet, go for thin hangers. Get special skirt hangers for all your skirts. Try to hang up as many clothes as you can.

2. Sort according to the Occasion.

Now organise the clothes in a way so that they are easiest to find. Arrange your clothes according to the occasion. Work clothes, gym clothes, casual wear and your party wear must all have a distinct space in your wardrobe.

3. Sort based on Colour.

It becomes easier to locate clothes when they are colour coordinated. Start with light shades and stack the darker shades towards the end. Do this for all your clothes, be it work, gym or casual. Separate the tank tops, dresses, shirts and pants.

4. Use shelf dividers.

There will be some clothes that you cannot hang. For those clothes, use shelf dividers on the racks. This will keep them neat. Store your most-used items at eye level, less-used items below, and least-used items up high on the shelf. Have separate sections for T-shirts and tops. Do the same for shorts, pants, trousers and jeans.

5. Get gold plates to name each section.

6. Use overhead space!

If you have overhead space, make the most of it. Use it to store bulky sweaters, sweats, and other items that are thick and easy to spot. Do not forget to sort your clothes by season.
Put the out of season clothes on the top racks and you can switch them with the clothes on the hangers when the time comes.

7. Use hooks in the wardrobe.

Hooks can create extra storage space when you hang them in the closet. Use them to hang your sling bags and coats.

8. Use accessory holders or boxes.

Moving on to shoes and accessories, you will definitely need racks and boxes for them. Accessories are usually the treasures that we collect over time. They lie in one corner of your closet all tangled up and forgotten. To organise them, use accessory holders or boxes to separate them all. Put your earrings on one side and necklaces on another. The expensive jewellery can go in a jewellery box that has compartments. Jewellery boxes are very useful when it comes to organising your accessories. They keep the precious jewellery from corroding or breaking.

9. Mount a pegboard.

Mount a pegboard inside your wardrobe and hang your most-used accessories on it. This way you can just pick them up on your way out. Your accessories will no longer be forgotten and will complement your outfits.

10. Invest in shoe racks.

Your shoes may take up a lot of space in your closet, so it is important to make the most of your space by storing them in the most organised and efficient manner. Try to organise them by occasion and how often you wear them. If you have a shoe rack in the front hall, try to keep the most used shoes, like flip-flops, loafers and work shoes on that rack. What will be left in your closet will mostly consist or your party wear heels, winter boots and occasional wear flats. Assign a shelf for the different types of shoes. Consider getting a hanging shoe rack for your flats and sneakers.

11. Lights!

Lastly, just like accessories compliment a good outfit, a well-organised closet has to be accompanied with good lighting. Lighting is key to finding anything in a closet, though so often there is not enough of it. Having an electrician add shelf lighting would be optimal, but it is not cheap, and it is a momentum killer. Instead, use stick-on or screw-in battery-operated LED lights on each shelf to achieve the same results for a fraction of the cost.

A well-organised closet definitely gives you peace of mind. You will not have to shuffle around looking for a missing blouse anymore. Just remember to put all your clothes in their designated shelves and save yourself from having to redo your wardrobe every week.
